Gordon, a 4-6-2 engine, was built at Doncaster on the other railway as a test engine for a class of which The Flying Scotsman is the only one left. Gordon is a boastful engine, but he works well and Sir Topham Hatt has been heard to remark that he wishes he had two of him. But he is careful not to let Gordon hear him say it!

Gordon has always viewed himself as the most important engine, mostly because of his size and strength, and that his main task is to pull the Express. At times, this can lead to him feeling superior, even to the point of uppity. However, he usually learns his lesson, realising that all engines have their place in the team.
